Canopy on the Comal has had a beautiful and unique history that we are honored to write into something new.

Originally known as Comal Sanitarium, this building is a landmark of New Braunfels. Built in the 1920s, the estate was established by physicians Dr. Arthur Bergfeld and Dr. M.C. Hagler. Fully operational by 1921, this distinguished two-story structure was a beacon of progress, featuring ten patient rooms on the first floor and an additional ten patient rooms, eight bathrooms, and a large ward on the second floor. Notably, it was home to Texas’s first-ever X-ray machine, imported from Germany. The building's journey as a hospital came to a close in 1965.

As the town of New Braunfels began to grow and change so did this historic space.

With the surrounding beauty of the trees and easy access to the Comal river, the space became a local staple for summer time joy and laughter as a tube rental location. Summer after summer, this venue served the community as a place for locals and tourist to refresh and enjoy cooling off in the Texas heat. With the combination of the gorgeous deck shaded in trees and walking access to New Braunfels picturesque downtown it was easy to see how this space could so easily become a staple.
